Sending |
E-mail on the Newton works unlike e-mail on your desktop. LunaSuite enhances the Newton OS with the ability to e-mail any data that an application offers for transportation. This means that if you can beam something, you can just as easily send it via mail. The notes application for example will send anything you write or draw via e-mail. Every Newton application offers a text representation of its data
| 1) |
Hit the routing button |
Tap the envelope in any place you see it.
|
| 2) |
Tap Mail, a routing slip will come up to let you route the item you want to mail |
|
First choose in the upper left corner an appropriate Owner, to determine which mail server is used, then choose an appropriate Worksite so the correct connection is made.
Then choose who to send your mail to (John perhaps?), and who you want to send a copy to (Bob perhaps?). You can choose either a normal carbon copy or a blind carbon copy, where the recipient list is not viewable for every adressee.
Give it a subject that describes what your are sending. Being descriptive and concise is considered good practice. LunaSuite tries to help you by using the first few words of the item, or the title if it has one.
|
| 3) |
Tap Mail |
|
You can choose to send it now or later. If you choose later it will be put in your outbox, you can send it together with other items at a later time of your chosing.
|
| 4) |
Tap Now |
|
Your mail will now be delivered. The mailserver will make sure the mail is delivered to the recipient.
 |
InetSMTP |
To send mail with your Newton LunaSuite uses the most popular protocol used on the Internet, the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, SMTP. It is a widely used protocol, which lets you enter mail messages into almost any mailserver on the world-wide Internet for onward transport protocol.
SMTP lets LunaSuite talk to a mailserver, telling it who wants to send what data to which destination. This protocol does not care what is send, but to ensure compatibility with other mailsystems, LunaSuite adheres to the internet standards (RFC822).
To add SMTP settings to your LunaSuite setup, you can use the LunaSuite Config package for most uses, see the Configuring section on the use of the Config package. To set up all the details, you can follow the numbered instructions in this section.
SMTP settings need to be added to both Ownercards and Worksite cards. The very good reasons for this are explained in the section Configuration, were you also can read how to work with Owner and Worksite cards.
Configuring an owner card
| 1) |
Tap Add |
|
| 2) |
Tap InetSMTP |
|
Here you can enter the information concerning sending mail and your mailserver. You have to provide a hostname for the mailserver, and specify how mail sould be send. Also you can specify a signature, a standard piece of text or ink, to be attached to selected mail messages.
|
| 3) |
Tap Hostname |
|
Fill in the name of the mail server site you want this Owner to send mail from. Typically something like :
mail.yourprovider.com
Tip ! Check your desktop mailclient, if you have one, for the detailed settings. Otherwise, ask the administrator of your mailservice.
If the hostname is correct, tap X.
|
| 4) |
Tap Sending Mail |
|
Check Automatically disconnect after receiving if you want to drop the communication when the last message is sent. Otherwise LunaSuite will stay logged in into the mailserver, allowing you to send additional mail. Tap X when ready.
|
| 5) |
Tap Mail Signature |
|
If you are happy with everything, all necessary information is now stored in the Owner ard of your choice, so tap to close the InetSMTP settings window.
|
Your Owner Card will now have a new item, InetSMTP.
Configuring a Worksite card
LunaSuite allows you to dial in to several different dial-in providers via the Worksite card mechanism. For each location you can setup a Worksite card and define your preferred service provider.
| 1) |
Tap an appropriate Worksite or make a new one |
|
| 2) |
Tap Add |
|
| 3) |
Tap InetSMTP |
If you can't add InetSMTP info, you already have InetSMTP info on your card, tap Show and choose All Info to see the settings. To alter these, just tap on the item you want to change.
LunaSuite converts linefeeds automatically while in communication. This is very important if you use a serial modem connection some terminals in use by dial-up services perform conversion of these characters. Most ISP's use TCP/IP connections which require no conversion, Lunasuite senses this automatically.
|
| 4) |
Tap Communications |
|
| 5) |
Tap Connection Type |
Tap on the diamond to choose the type of connection you want to make with your mail host, NIE or Modem.
If you want to use the NIE, you can choose it here. If you want to use a serial connection, either direct or via a dial-in shell, choose modem.
NIE
LunaSuite will use the internet connection you attached to the worksite card if you don't specify otherwise on the card.
| 1) |
Tap Options |
|
| 2) |
Tap Host Address |
|
Check the checkmark to use the settings that are provided from the Ownercard used in conjunction. If you want to hardcode the server, you can do it here. Tap X.
|
| 3) |
Tap Connection Settings |
|
You have now completed the NIE settings, thus completing your POP3 Worksite info.
|
Modem
| 1) |
Tap Options |
|
| 2) |
Tap Connection Settings |
|
Adjust this to your modem and the modem you are connecting to. The options button gives access to the buffer size.
Tip ! Check your desktop connection software if you have such.
Tap X when finished.
|
| 3) |
Tap Options |
|
| 4) |
Tap Phonenumber |
|
Choose the name card of your dial-in service. When making this namecard, do not forget to enter the country and city information, because otherwise your Newton will assume your service provider is in the default country, the USA. And try to call there!
Tap X when finished.
|
Uncheck the Ask for address on connecting if you want LunaSuite to check where to connect to
every time.
You will also need to make login and logout scripts using the built in script edtor. This is a really powerfull scripting ability, allowing one time password schemes and other complex login procedures. This subject is fully covered in the reference section Scripting.

Control over sending mail
You can have more control over sending your mail by using the SMTP preferences that are accessible via the Info button in the Inbox.
If you tap Inet SMTP prefs you will be able to alter the sending behaviour.
By changing these settings you are able to let the LunaSuite always use the default Owner and Worksite instead of asking for them when sending. You can choose not to see what is going on, by disabling the status dialogs. If you don't want to choose the time of sending but always want it send right away or always send your mail deferred, you can specify that too.
