Receiving |
Receiving e-mail on your Newton with LunaSuite is easy and powerful. E-mail you receive can be
simple text or MIME encoded. The handling of MIME attachements is done by the same engine that is
used for the webbrowsing part of LunaSuite. This means that not only can you send and receive plain
text and Newton objects as notes, dates and names, LunaSuite will actually handle several types of
common attachments from the internet in a meaningful way. Receive images, newton packages, html
files and sound in your e-mail box.
To receive mail with the LunaSuite open the Inbox on your Newton, which is used to transport
items into the system. LunaSuite adds another route for items to be retrieved into your
Newton, in addition to the default fax and beam methods. To retrieve mail, follow the next
instructions.
| 1) |
Go to your Inbox |
|
| 2) |
Tap Receive |
|
| 3) |
Tap the transport you want to use, e.g. Inet POP3 |
|
First choose an appropriate Owner, to determine which mail server is used, then choose an appropriate Worksite so the correct connection is made. LunaSuite will ask this for every transport, every time the transport is invoked unless you switch this off by setting the Inbox preferences for the appropriate transport.
|
| 4) |
Tap continue |
Tap when ready.
LunaSuite will keep you closely informed on all progress. If you don't want to see all the
technical details you can turn the status dialogs off. This also turns off the result report.
When all mail is received LunaSuite will stay connected until you close it yourself, or if you
configured it in your worksite card it disconnects. The transport will report what happened in
detail, not all messages may be retrieved, because of their size. You can alter the behaviour
with the receiving mail settings on your Owner card.
If you have the setting to not disconnect, the messages that are not retrieved will
be remote items in your Inbox. Upon examining the subject and sender you might want to
retieve them after all. To do this you can select the remote messages you want and choose
receive and then Inet Pop3.
|
| 5) |
Tap the mail message you want to read |
When you tap your mail in the inbox, LunaSuite will show you the message.
You can put away the received mail. If it is Newton originated, it will automatically be put away
in the correct application, otherwise Lunasuite will ask you were to put it, this will default to
the Notes application. By holding your pen down on images or html documents you gain access to
powerful options like copying to clipboard. You can also easily reply and forward your mail from
here.
You can add the sender to your Names, making future replies easy. You can save mail as a text in
your notepad, or put the document unchanged into Notes, complete with the foldingparts by choosing
copy document to Notes.
If a message consists of different parts you can use the 4-way directional scroller
to scroll to the other parts. Or you can fold a part you are not interested in by tapping the and it will turn into which depicts a folded item.
Currently you can receive sounds (.AU or basic sound files), images (GIF or JPEG),
HTML, Newton packages, Vcards, and several more types of files.

InetPOP3 |
To receive mail with your Newton LunaSuite uses the most popular protocol used on the Internet, the
Post Office Protocol version 3, POP3. It is a protocol that lets you retrieve mail messages from
almost any mailserver on the world-wide Internet.
The Post Office protocol is based on the idea that the mailserver stores your mail only for you
to retrieve. What happens afterward is not the concern of the Post Office Protocol server. Sounds
remarkably like the real world, doesn't it?
What this means for mobile mailreaders is that mail retrieved and deleted from the server is only
safekept in the mobile store. This is maybe not the ideal situation. So, if you are using LunaSuite
combined with a stationary desktop based mailclient, be sure to think through all the
ramifications. You can have LunaSuite leave mail on the server after retrieving it and at the same
time ignoring messages already retrieved. This means that mails stays on the server until you
retrieve and delete it. This can be done with LunaSuite or another mailclient.
To add POP3 settings to your LunaSuite setup follow the numbered instructions in this section.
POP3 settings need to be added to both Ownercards and Worksite cards.
Configuring an Owner card
| 1) |
Tap Add |
|
| 2) |
Tap InetPOP3 |
|
Here you can enter the information concerning your pop mail account. You have to provide a
username and password, and the mailserver where your mail resides. Also you can tell LunaSuite how
to handle your mail when it retrieves it from the server.
|
| 3) |
Tap Hostname |
|
Fill in the name of the mail service site you want this Owner to retrieve mail from. Typically
something like :
mail.yourprovider.com
Tip ! Check your desktop mailclient, if you have one, for all the detailed settings. Otherwise, check with the administrator of your mailservice.
Note ! Please note that some mailclients ask you for a shorthand notation of your username and your mailserver in one expression of the form username@mail.yourprovider.com. LunaSuite will not work if you fill this in, you need to separate the mailserver name and the username and use them seperately.
If the hostname is to your liking, tap X.
|
| 4) |
Tap Username and password |
|
Fill in the username and password for your pop mail box. If you don't want your password in
Newton, or you use one-time or time related password schemes, check the box Ask for password on
login and go to step 8.
|
| 4.1) |
Tap Set Password |
|
| 4.2) |
Fill in your password and tap Set. Then tap X |
|
Your password is now set. Tap X.
|
| 5) |
Tap Receiving |
|
Uncheck Leave messages on server if you want LunaSuite to remove mail on the server after
retrieving. Otherwise LunaSuite will delete all retrieved messages from the server.
Check Automatically disconnect after receiving if you want to drop the communication when the
last message is retrieved. Otherwise LunaSuite will stay logged in into the mailserver and
periodically check for new mail.
Uncheck Skip messages bigger than if you want LunaSuite to retrieve messages regardless of size.
The size can be adjusted by tapping the diamond. If everything is to your liking, tap X.
You can now choose to change the User mode:
|
| 6) |
Tap User Mode |
|
If you choose the Expert mode, you will gain access to more possibilities :
|
| 7) |
Tap Activate Periodically |
|
You can add times on which your Newton will retrieve mail automatically, if it sleeps
it will even wake up for it. You only have to make sure your Newton has access to the network and
enough power to complete its tasks.
All necessary information is now stored in the Ownercard of your choice, so tap X to close the
InetPOP3 settings window.
Your Owner Card will now have a new item, InetPOP3.
|
Configuring a Worksite card
LunaSuite allows you to dial in to several different dial-in providers via the Worksite card
mechanism. For each location you can setup a Worksite card and define your preferred service
provider.
| 1) |
Tap an appropriate Worksite or make a new one |
|
| 2) |
Tap Add |
|
| 3) |
Tap InetPOP3 |
If you can't add InetPOP3 info, you already have InetPOP3 info on your card, tap Show and choose
All Info to see the settings. To alter these , just tap on the appropriate line.
|
| 4) |
Tap Communications |
|
| 5) |
Tap Connection Type |
Tap on the diamond to choose the type of connection you want to make with your mail host, NIE or Modem.
If you want to use the NIE, you can choose it here. If you want to use a serial connection, either direct or via a dial-in shell, choose modem.
NIE
LunaSuite will use the internet connection you attached to the worksite card if you don't specify otherwise on the card.
| 1) |
Tap Options |
|
| 2) |

|
Check the checkmark to use the settings that are provided from the Ownercard used in conjunction. If you want to hardcode the server, you can do it here. Tap X.
|
| 3) |
Tap Connection Settings |
|
You have now completed the NIE settings, thus completing your POP3 Worksite info.
|
Modem
| 1) |
Tap Options |
|
| 2) |
Tap Connection Settings |
|
Adjust this to your modem and the modem you are connecting to. The options button gives access to the buffer size.
Tip ! Check your desktop connection software if you have such.
Tap X when finished.
|
| 3) |
Tap Options |
|
| 4) |
Tap Phonenumber |
|
Choose the name card of your dial-in service. When making this namecard, do not forget to enter the country and city information, because otherwise your Newton will assume your service provider is in the default country, the USA. And try to call there!
Tap X when finished.
|
Uncheck the Ask for address on connecting if you want LunaSuite to check where to connect to
every time.
You will also need to make login and logout scripts using the built in script edtor. This is a really powerfull scripting ability, allowing one time password schemes and other complex login procedures. This subject is fully covered in the reference section Scripting.

Configuring Transport preferences
You can have more control over receiving your mail by using the POP3 preferences that are
accessible via the Info button in the Inbox.
If you tap Inet POP3 prefs you will be able to alter the receiving behaviour.
By changing these settings you are able to let the LunaSuite always use the current Owner and
Worksite instead of asking for them. You can choose not to see what is going on, by disabling the
status dialogs.
You can specify the folder you want your e-mail to be stored in, for instance "Communication",
the default is the "Unfiled Items" drawer.
The appearance of your e-mail text can be altered by tapping the Font button.
Here you can change the appearance of your messages. You can also choose fonts you have
downloaded specifically.
