Lunatech Research announces the release of LunaSuite Pro 2.1Bc321EN
LunaSuite is a set of modular network tools for Newton technologies. LunaSuite integrates with the Newton 2.1 Operating System. It adds functionality to Newton's Names, Owners and Worksites, InBox, OutBox and every application that uses transports. LunaSuite provides a "plug-in" architecture. Currently available modules include eMail, a WWW Browser, FTP, and GSM-SMS.
About this release:
This release is the second "last" beta release of LunaSuite Pro 2.1. Due to feedback from the growing LunaSuite user base, we decided to release at least one more beta before going final. That, combined with the fact that Apple just axed the Newton, means we need a bit more time before releasing LunaSuite as final. You can download LunaSuite Pro from our site in Macintosh and PC format. This is a fully functional version which will only work for 2 weeks unless it is registered. Registered users will be able to download and install LunaSuite Pro 2.1Bc321EN without having to register the software again. LunaSuite will only run on Newton OS 2.1 units and requires NIE 2.0. A MP2100 or upgraded MP2000 is strongly recommended, although there are persons using LunaSuite Pro on eMates.
What's new or fixed in this release:
- Reimplemented email scheduling. For instance, it is now possible to check for new mail every 5 minutes if you like.
- "Send on check" and "Check on send" options have been added for the POP3 and SMTP transports.
- Added an Web application (for now called "Scheduler") which will recursively download websites at a given time. This is handy for downloading a set of webpages into the cache for later viewing.
- Added new eMail writing stationary for in the Notepad. The new stationary gives a very clear overview of the receipients of the message.
- Improved HTTP cookie implementation. There should not be any more problems accessing sites such as my.yahoo.com.
- Fixed various HTTP transport bugs.
- Problems with dates and timezones on email messages have been solved.
- Added support for disabling PASV for the FTP transport.
- Transparent GIF images now display correctly.
- Implemented X-Faces for email (hold down pen in an rfc822 header).
- Fixed misc problems with HTML.
- Outgoing text email messages can now be wrapped at 74 columns automatically.
- Signatured are now attached differently.
- The email viewer now shrinks itself properly instead of taking up the whole screen when there are just a few lines of text.
- It is now possible to lock FTP and HTTP items in the cache so they won't expire.
- Changed cache expiration algorithms.
- And a few other nice surprises...
An overview of the major LunaSuite features:
- POP3 and SMTP mailer.
- HTTP (with support for proxy servers, cookies and authentication) and FTP (upload and download) transfers.
- HTML 3.2 support including: Tables, Frames, a true layout, contextual menus.
- MIME implementation which can handle: GIF (animating), JPEG, Base64, HTML, Quoted-Printable, MacBinary, AppleSingle, native Newton data, Newton packages, multiparts, basic sound, AIFF/AIFC sound, and vCards.
- Full integration with the Newton OS (URLs into names, able to view raw HTML from Notepad and NewtonWorks).
- Separate applications for bookmarks, a browser, a configuration app, a go-to application and a web retriever app.
- Developer API documentation.

Future plans for LunaSuite:
With regards to the future of the LunaSuite 2.1, we are planning two maintenance releases during 2Q98. With the announcement from Apple Computer that they are stopping with the Newton OS, it is difficult for us to make any new commitments other than this. We will issue a statement shortly on our view of future Newton developments from Lunatech Reseach.
The Newton is a great platform. Apple has left itself without a replacement, thus giving up on the hand-held and mobile markets. Plans for future devices are MacOS based products. How much sense does this make when you consider the size of the (shrinking) Mac market? But heh, "think different"...
